Plans for future versions of SQLyog

From the release of the first fully MySQL 5 compatible SQLyog (SQLyog 5.0 released November 2005) and till now (8.x tree) the SQLyog program has developed rapidly. The most important enhancements are:

  • Support for MySQL version 5 Stored Procedures, Triggers, Views, Events and 'strict mode'.
  • Multi-tabbed editor. Every Editor tab has it own 'children' RESULT tabs for easy and fast navigation between results of different queries.
  • Full support for CURRENT_TIMESTAMP and other MySQL KEYWORDs that the server gives a special treatment.
  • Smart 'autocomplete' feature like you find it in the most advanced IDE's (development tools) with full support for SQL keywords, functions, all kinds of database objects and aliases.
  • A unique 'favorites' feature.
  • Character set handling fully supports MySQL Unicode implementation. All characters MySQL can handle, we can too!
  • Visual Query Builder and Visual Schema Designer for intuitive database and query design.
  • User management complete with the latest MySQL versions.
  • Improved Data Export options - including support for Microsoft Excel.
  • Support for ALL available storage Engines (engines from MySQL AB as well as 3rd party engines). Foreign Keys support with those engines where such are available.
  • Support for transactions where applicable.
  • Updated sync tools. The most flexible Schema Sync tool available and the fastest available Data Sync tool.
  • Updated 'look and feel' including 'zebra' Office 2007 GRID design, gradients, Vista style icons and resizable dialogues.
  • Query Formatter ('beautifier').
  • Query Profiler supporting all possible ways of profiling (EXPLAIN (EXTENDED), SHOW PROFILE and SESSIONS STATUS VARIABLES analysis) completely transparently implemented.
  • The free SQLyog was released as Open Source under the GPL license as 'SQLyog COMMUNITY version'.
  • The complete codebase has been completely 'reworked' and refactored. It is now a very well-structured and well-documented codebase.
  • Several hundreds of usability improvements. Development is and has always been very attentive to user requests.
  • And much more! See version history.
Plans for the near future include:
  • For quite a lot of the most recent features introduced we plan further usability improvements.
  • Support for new features of MySQL 6.0 (like XML export/import, server side backup/restore etc.)
For the 'longer out future' we are considering (but please note that nothing has been decided in detail):
  • Support for BIT type and better support for (VAR)BINARY types and binary data in general as well as for very long varchars.
  • GUI-support for Table Partitions and Tablespaces
  • Text strings used by menu's, dialogues and wizards will no longer be hard-coded into the program but will be read from a file at runtime. As a consequence complete localization to ALL languages will be possible.
  • Usability improvements with the SJA (SQLyog Job Agent) - including a 'conflict resolver' for DATA SYNC to make it possible for advanced users to define their own 'conflict resolving rule' to replace the current 'source overwrites target' conflict rule.
  • A 'projects' feature.
  • We are considering how the current GUI design can be improved in terms of usability and intuitively. TAB-based connections, various re-designs of the Object Browser (like all connections displayed in one Object browser, drag and drop options etc.).
  • 'FORMS' understood as a 'data display mode' based on a 'flipped' GRID displaying one row at a time and optimized for data input from the keyboard.
